The story of the fateful 16th-century Narváez expedition to the New World was chronicled–and some say idealized–by one of the three Spanish explorers who survived it. The eight-year ordeal had begun with a crew of 600. Author Laila Lalami seeks more discerning version of the journey in her 2014 work of historical fiction, The Moor's Account, retelling events through the eyes of the fourth and final survivor, the Moroccan slave Estebanico (who received scant mention in Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca's account).

Lalami, a professor of creative writing at the University of California at Riverside, discusses the acclaimed book, winner of the American Book Award and a finalist for the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. It is the campus-wide common read this spring at Metropolitan Community College–Maple Woods.

Co-presented by Metropolitan Community College–Maple Woods.
