Walk-in (all ages) Discover what's for dinner at Burr Oak Woods as the captive amphibians, fish and turtles enjoy their feast every Wednesday and Saturday. The snakes are fed every other week (Jan. 5 & 19).

Bird in the Hand       (Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center)
January 6 · Saturday · 10 AM–1 PM
Walk-in (all ages) Missouri River Bird Observatory staff and Burr Oak Woods partner in an on-going project to identify and track the birds that come to our feeders each winter. From the resident chickadees and cardinals to the migrating juncos and sparrows, we capture, apply colored bands and release these fascinating creatures. Once banded and recorded, you will be able to track individual birds through this and future seasons.

Conservation Kids: Slithering Snakes       (Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center)
January 9 · Tuesday · 6:30–8 PM
Registration required (ages 7–13) They slide along on their belly, searching for something yummy to eat. Snakes are a very important part of nature in Missouri, plus they are pretty cool too! Join us as we explore the scaly world of snakes. We will find out what makes snakes special then meet some live snakes up close!

Little Acorns: Deer in Winter       (Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center)
January 10 · Wednesday · 10–11 AM or 1–2 PM
Registration required (ages 3–5 with an adult) Some animals are hibernating during the winter, but the white-tailed deer are out searching for food, even in the snow! Come learn more about how these large mammals
survive during the cold winter months.

Home School: Extinct, Endangered and Recovered       (Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center)

Registration required. Missouri is home to some amazing plants and animals. Unfortunately, some of them
are in danger of disappearing forever, and for a few it is already too late. Join us as we look at some endangered and extinct species. We will also find out about some of the success stories of recovered species right here in Missouri.

Track Clues       (Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center)

No registration required (all ages) Even though it is cold outside, many wild animals must spend the winter searching for food and shelter. Join us on a hike as we look for tracks and other clues to figure out what the wild animals at Burr Oak Woods have been doing this winter.

Registration required (babes under 36 months) Brrrr! Shiver on in to the nature center to enjoy some indoor fun as we learn about animals that stay active throughout the long winter chill.

Weird Wildlife       (Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center)

No registration required (all ages) Did you know there is an animal that doesn't have a mouth? How about one with no eyes or ears? Missouri is home to some interesting, strange and unusual animals. Even some of our well-known wildlife have unusual traits. Join us as we uncover some of the odd critters that call our state home.

Rockin' & Readin' Nature Tales       (Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center)
January 27 · Saturday · 11 AM–Noon
Walk-in (ages 2+) Join us for story hour as we lead you on fantastic nature adventures! We will meet birds, mammals and all sorts of magnificent creatures! We will cross rivers, discover mysteries within the forest and fly across the prairies. Our imaginations are the only limits.

Wearable Mammal Tracks       (Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center)
January 27 · Saturday · 1–2 PM
Registration required (all ages) Every single element of our surroundings has something to tell us. Learn the basics of tracking and bring a t-shirt or handkerchief to paint using realistic wildlife stamps.
